Description
High School Counseling is an important role in providing guidance both to individual students and the school as a whole. From the emotional and educational development of young people, to helping them explore potential pathways, the job of the High School Counselor requires an array of skills and experience. As a High School Counselor, you will play a key role in helping students navigate their educational, social and personal growth.
*High School Counselor Responsibilities & Duties*
Provide individual and group counseling to students
Assess and address students' academic, career, and personal/social development needs
Develop and implement comprehensive school counseling programs
Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to support student success
Assist students in setting realistic academic and career goals
Facilitate career exploration and college admission processes
Address and resolve students' personal and social issues
Conduct workshops and presentations on relevant topics
Maintain accurate records and documentation
Monitor students' academic progress and intervene when necessary
Refer students to external support services and resources as needed
Provide crisis intervention and support
Promote a positive school climate and culture
Advocate for students' needs and rights
Stay updated on educational policies and best practices
Participate in professional development opportunities
Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of counseling programs

Bachelor's degree in School Counseling, Psychology, or a related field
State licensure or MAIS certification in School Counseling
Experience working with high school students
Strong understanding of adolescent development
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse population
Knowledge of college and career readiness standards
Competence in crisis intervention and conflict resolution
Familiarity with school counseling technology and software
Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize effectively
Commitment to ongoing professional development
State certification or licensure as a School Counselor
Strong understanding of educational and psychological principles
Effective listening and empathy skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality and ethical standards
Proficiency in counseling theories and techniques
Strong organizational and time management skills
Capacity to build rapport with students, parents, and staff
Knowledge of academic advising and student assessment practices
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Skill in conflict resolution and problem-solving
Familiarity with legal and ethical guidelines in school counseling
