St. Joe students receive honors in 2023 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
MADISON (Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2023) – Two St. Joseph Catholic School art students, Camryn Cassreino and Lillian Boggan, have won high-profile awards in the 2023 Scholastic Art Awards sponsored by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. Cassreino, a senior, won a Gold Key award, the top honor, for a painting of her dog Lucy; she also won a Silver Key, the second highest award, for her painting of the Canal Street Streetcar in New Orleans. Boggan, a junior, received honorable mention for two paintings: one is a parody of a Beach Boys album cover, and the other is a portrait of a family. “Both of these students do amazing work,” said Lou Turner, St. Joe’s art teacher. “Their attention to detail and their hard work has led to the creation of four beautiful paintings. They are just two of the many talented students in our art program at St. Joe.” St. Joseph Catholic School, founded in 1870 by the Sisters of Mercy, offers seventh- through 12th-grade students of all faith backgrounds a rigorous college prep curriculum grounded in the teachings of the Catholic Church. St. Joe, 308 New Mannsdale Road in Madison just west of the Interstate 55-Mississippi 463 interchange, is accredited by the Mid-South Association of Independent Schools and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools – the accrediting arm of Cognia. Art classes are among several electives students can take at St. Joe. Others include band, theater, engineering and journalism. Cassreino’s and Boggan’s awards were chosen from almost 1,500 submissions by 459 students across the state. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, in existence since 1923, recognizes the vision, ingenuity, and talent of young artists and writers. Student submissions were judged by leaders in the visual and literary arts. Jurors look for work that exemplifies the awards’ core values of originality technical skill and the emergence or personal voice or vision. Students who received a Gold Key award will have their works on display at the Mississippi Museum of Art Feb. 14 through April 2. Gold Key award winners also have advanced to the national competition in New York; national winners will be announced March 22. All Gold Key, Silver Key and Honorable Mention recipients will be honored Sunday, April 2, at an awards ceremony at the Mississippi Museum of Art. “We are so proud of Camryn, Lillian and all of our art students who do such amazing work every year,” said Dr. Dena Kinsey, St. Joe principal. “We have a great, comprehensive Fine Arts program here at St. Joe led by dedicated and talented teachers. This year’s winners and their work are just a few examples of the excellent job all our art students produce every year.”
